What does a SART look like on radar? A SART has a receiver that detects the signals from X-band radars (9.2 - 9.5 GHz). If the SART detects a signal it immediately transmits twelve pulses on the same frequency.
A standard SART 9 GHz radar transponder, produced by Jotron, on board a Norwegian ferry. The unit is 251 mm high. A search and rescue transponder (SART) is a self-contained, waterproof transponder intended for emergency use at sea. These devices may be either a radar-SART, or a GPS-based AIS-SART (automatic identification system SART).
ยง 131.890 EPIRBs and SARTs. The name of the vessel must be plainly marked or painted on each Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) and on each Search and Rescue Transmitter (SART), except on an EPIRB or SART -
EPIRBs are larger than PLBs. EPIRBs usually have more battery life. In fact they require them to have a minimum of 48 hours of battery life. On the other hand, they require the PLBs have only half that at 24 hours of battery life. EPIRBs always have a strobe light built in, while PLBs may or may not have a strobe light.
Do I need an EPIRB or PLB? Every boat should have some kind of 406 MHz distress beacon. If you have a small boat like a kayak, SUP, canoe, bass boat or even a pontoon boat, consider a Personal Locator Beacon. If you are going offshore, an EPIRB is the right beacon. What is the difference between SART and EPIRB?
The SART may provide a visual or audible indication of interrogation by a 3-cm radar. The Satellite EPIRB will change its strobe light pattern to indicate radar interrogation. The SART informs survivors when the SART switches to the "standby" mode. The AIS SART will alarm to indicate that SAR craft with radars are getting close.
